Yosop Ryoo

Master of Art + Design, 2008

Now Teaching and Research Assistant at AUT Spatial Design.

Yosop’s work explores the poignant experience of loss. His Honours project proposed a reworking of the Symonds St cemetery disrupted in the 1960’s by the construction of the motorways; and his Masters project, Being in Painful Circumferences, was a design for a memorial meeting-space in the De-Militarised Zone between North and South Korea. The project addressed ideas of mourning encapsulated in the Korean word han. A rotating memory vault would mark the passage of time and create a moment of contact for disconnected families.

Yosop won AAA Cavalier Bremworth and DINZ Best Awards for the project.
