In her project Shifting Surface, Fang explored the idea of ‘non-places’, the sites we inhabit daily but which are suspended in between: waiting rooms, foyers, taxi cabs, airport lounges. She designed a lookout at Puhinui Road near the Auckland International Airport where people can observe and reflect on the flurry of comings and goings, arrivals and departures overhead. Many of us are migrants, either for a short time or permanently. Is a journey ever complete? The lookout creates a folded loop of positive and negatively-curved surfaces, which perform as interior and exterior spaces.
